Temple of Athena Parthenos (`the Virgin') on
the Acropolis at Athens; built 447-438 BC
under the supervision of Phidias, and the
most perfect example of Doric architecture
(by Callicrates and Ictinus). In turn a
Christian church and Turkish mosque, it was
then used as a gunpowder store, and reduced
to ruins when the Venetians bombarded the
Acropolis 1687. Greek sculptures from the
Parthenon were removed by Lord Elgin in the
early 19th century; popularly known as the
Elgin marbles.
